We present a new multi-analytical approach to the characterization of black pigments in Spanish Levantine rock art. This new protocol seeks to identify the raw materials that were used, as well as reconstruct the different technical gestures and decision-making processes involved in the obtaining of these black pigments. For the first of these goals, the pictorial matter of the black figurative motifs documented at the Les Dogues rock art shelter (Ares del Maestre, Castellon, Spain) was characterized through the combination of physicochemical and archeobotanical analyses. During the first stage of our research protocol, in situ and non-destructive analyses were carried out by means of porta…
In vitro evaluation of composite resin fluorescence after natural aging
2020
Background Some composite resins contain luminophorous agents in order to reproduce tooth fluorescence. The objective of this study was to compare the fluorescence spectra emitted by composite resins with those of human enamel and dentin, and their emission behaviour after a 90-day natural aging period. Material and Methods Nine shades of the composite resins Z350XT/3M (XT), Opallis/FGM (OP) and Empress Direct/Ivoclar-Vivadent (ED) were analyzed. Five specimens (10.0 mm x 2.0mm) were fabricated for each shade. Enamel (5.0 mm x 0.30 mm) and dentin (5.0 mm x 1.0 mm) specimens were obtained from sound human third molars. Fluorescence spectra of human dentin and enamel as well as the composite …
Fluorimetric determination of amphetamine in urine by flow injection with on-line liquid–liquid extraction
2001
Abstract Determination of amphetamine in urine was performed by batch and flow injection methodologies. The suitable experimental conditions for fluorimetric measurements were established. The liquid–liquid extraction was carried out at pH 13 using diethyl ether as extracting reagent. The measurement conditions were 260 nm and 277 nm for excitation and emission wavelengths, respectively. The method requires standard addition calibration and Youden blank correction. The influence of the main metabolites of amphetamine and metamphetamine were studied. The accuracy and precision of the proposed method was tested and the method is adapted to the flow injection procedure with on-line extraction.
Effectiveness of microwave based digestion procedures for the demineralization of human milk and infant formulas prior to fluorometric determination …
1996
The use of two types of microwave oven, one domestic (A) and the other specially designed for laboratory (B) for microwave-based digestion, to destroy the organic matter in milk and infant formulas prior to fluorometric determination of selenium is studied in order to check their applicability and reliability. In both systems the best results were obtained using the acid mixture HNO3—H2O2, and additional treatment with perchloric acid (60%) in a Thermoblock. The application of two different microwave-based digestion procedures to infant formulas was free of interferences. In the case of human milk, it was necessary to use the standard addition method. Values obtained for detection and quant…
Automated Photo-Induced Fluorescence Determination of Flumetsulam
2009
The present article deals with a new procedure for determination of the herbicide flumetsulam. The fluorimetric procedure is performed on the basis of photo-increased fluorimetric emission of the pesticide solution and by means of a multicommutation continuous-flow assembly. The alkaline solution containing the analyte is irradiated online and then directly forced through the fluorimeter flow cell. The analysis of different samples is completely automated, as the analyte separation was performed online by including a separation cartridge in the manifold. When dealing with solid samples (such as soil samples), the automation was completed by adding to the manifold the corresponding device fo…
Flow-injection spectrofluorimetric determination of paracetamol
1990
Abstract A flow-injection spectrofluorimetric determination of paracetamol is reported, based on the oxidation of the analyte with potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) immobilized on an anion-exchange resin, the fluorescence being enhanced with N,N′-dimethylformamide. Concentrations of paracetamol in the range 0.04–17.60 mg l−1 are determined with a relative standard deviation of 1.5%. The injection rate is 25 samples h−1. The influence of foreign species and the determination of paracetamol in several pharamaceutical formulations are also reported.
Theoretical prediction of the native fluorescence of pharmaceuticals
2009
At present, to search fluorescent compounds or to increase the native fluorescence is an active research line specially and not only with analytical purposes. On some analytical areas and from the early times of applications of fluorescence (mid-fifties) the fluorimeter was defined as the suitable detector for determination of pharmaceuticals and subsequently, this detection mode has been widely applied. Therefore, it is mandatory to develop new strategies to discover or to enhance in a simple way the native fluorescence of organic compounds to increase the number of analytes to be determined by direct fluorescence. In the present paper are studied further applications of a new tool suitabl…
Preconcentration of aluminium by micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration
1993
Abstract Traces of aluminium were preconcentrated in water samples by forming a complex with lumogallion, and successfully accumulated in the micellar phase obtained from cationic or non-ionic surfactants and filtered through 10 000 molecular weight cut-off ultrafiltration membranes. Studies indicated that, at pH 5.9, with 1 X 10 −3 M lumogallion and 2 X 10 −2 M cetyltrimethylamonium bromide, quantitative retention of aluminium present at μg ml −1 concentration levels was achieved. A micellar-enhanced fluorimetric procedure was employed to analyse the permeate solutions, whereas nitrous oxide-acetylene flame atomic emission spectrometry was used to determine aluminium in the retentate. The …

Comparative analysis of the electrostatics of the binding of cationic proteins to vesicles: Asymmetric location of anionic phospholipids
2009
The role of electrostatics is studied in the adsorption of cationic proteins to zwitterionic phosphatidylcholine (PC) and anionic PC/phosphatidylglycerol (PG) mixed small unilamellarvesicles (SUVs). For model proteins the interaction is monitored vs. PG content at low ionic strength. The adsorption of lysozyme and myoglobin (isoelectric point, pl 7-11) is investigated in SUVs, along with changes of the fluorescence emission spectra of the cationic proteins, via their adsorption on SUVs. In the Gouy-Chapman formalism, the activity coefficient goes with the square of charge number. Deviations from the ideal model could indicate the asymmetric location of the anionic phospholipid in the bilaye…
